Outlook Express

This document explains how to set up Microsoft Outlook Express on your computer.

  1. Start Outlook Express by clicking the Outlook Express icon on your desktop, or going to Internet Explorer, then the Mail Menu, then Read Mail.

  2. Click the Tools menu, then click Accounts.   [Screen shot]

  3. Double-click the entry that says POP3 account, or that is the mail(default) type.  [Screen shot]

  4. General tab:  make sure the Mail account is something sensible such as Surf-ICI, or pop.surf-ici.com.   You can change it to whatever you want, but we like to have it as Surf-ICI.   Enter your full first and last name for the Name field.  For both the E-mail address and the Reply address, enter your e-mail address (eg. jdoe@surf-ici.com).   Make sure "Include this account..." is checked.  [Screen shot]

  5. Servers tab:  the Incoming (POP3) as well as the Outgoing (SMTP) servers are BOTH pop.surf-ici.com.   Under the Incoming mail server section, make sure Log on using:  Account name (your username) and Password (your password) are all correct.  Under Outgoing Mail Server, My Server Requires Authentication does NOT need to be checked.  [Screen shot]

  6. Connection tab:   choose Connect using my phone line.  Under Modem, select Surf-ICI for "Use the following dial-up connection."  [Screen shot]

  7. Security tab:  nothing should be enabled here.  Leave this alone.  [Screen shot]

  8. Advanced tab:  the default settings are acceptable.  Outgoing mail (SMTP) port number should say 25, and POP3 should say 110.  These do NOT require SSL.  Under Delivery, please make sure Leave a copy of messages on server is NOT checked.  [Screen shot]

  9. Click OK, then click Close.

Congratulations!  That's it, and you should be ready to use Outlook Express.  To Send and Receive messages, click the Send and Receive button in the toolbar near the top.
