Unofficial AZ Fat Tire Festival
July 2-5

magnify.wmf (6262 bytes) OK After some great advise from a fellow rider I am changing the times and ride format.  there will be a 9 AM schedules ride and a 2: PM make it up as we go ride.

This is not an official event but instead a casual gathering of fat tire friends. This is a trial event and if there is enough interest this year it is probable that several clubs could work together to have an official event next year.

For this weekend I have invited all AZ bike clubs that I can reach via email. I have had a good response and expect many to turn  out.

Because this is loosely organized there is no reserved camping area. There are several free places to camp along Schultz Pass Road from near the bottom, where it turns to dirt to the pass and beyond. We will not know what spots are available. Groups should camp anywhere that is open and legal on Schultz Pass Road. Each group or individual is responsible for bringing everything that they will need. Water, chairs, tables, etc. This area has no facilities! I would not be surprised if there is a Forest Service ban on open fires. Usually they still let you use a camp stove. Please check with the Forest Service to see what restrictions are in effect for the Fourth of July weekend. All National Forest Rules Apply.

There will be two scheduled rides each day. At 8AM an all dirt ride for those who like to do more sight seeing than life risking and at 11AM a mostly single track white knuckle blowout. Some will even want to do both rides. I would like to see each club lead at least one ride. I have started a web page that will contain the most recent information available. Check frequently for updates. It is located at http://surf-ici.com/chaingang/AZFTF.htm At this site is a ride schedule with open time slots posted.

After your group has found a campsite and has settled in, send a representative to my camp so we can finalize plans. This way I will know where you are camped. We will have an informal gathering at my campsite so we can all get to know each other on Friday night. I will arrive in Flagstaff on the Thursday before the weekend starts. I should be just off the road and easy to spot. I will be in a 76 Ford Class C motor home that has a metal rack on the back containing blue water jugs and a generator. (I will not run the generator) I will have several bikes around and a sign with "Chain Gang" on it. If it looks like I have room feel free to camp with us.

Friday Evening
7PM meeting
Saturday
9:AM  Water Line Road with Tim Travis from the Prescott Chain Gang Cycling Club   We start at Schultz Tank and ride out to just past Abineau Canyon (10,400 ft) and back for a distance of 25 miles.  If you have never been on Waterline Road you are in for a real treat.  There are breathtaking views almost the entire route.  Don't forget your camera!  This ride is perfect for beginners because it is never steep or technical and you can turn around at any point and practically coast back to your camp site.

2: PM  make it up as we go ride.  Meet at Tim Travis camp site described above.

Sunday
9 AM Schultz Creek - Sunset Trail with Tom of SAMBA Southern Arizona Mountain Bike Association   This is one of the best single track loops in AZ.  Big views and high speed single track descents.  Meet at Schultz tank and be prepared.

2: PM  make it up as we go ride.  Meet at Tim Travis camp site described above.

Monday THIS RIDE CAN BE REPLACED
9:AM The Cosmic Soulstace (this is the spelling used in the Fat Tire book) race course with Tim Travis from the Prescott Chain Gang Cycling Club.  We will meet at Schultz Tank for this epic adventure.  This course is roughly 50 miles and is part of the great Cosmic Soulstace race that usually occurs every summer.     This ride is not very technical but is very long because it goes completely around the San Francisco Peaks.  There is lots of Aspen, views, and climbing.  Bring lots of food and water and expect a long day.
